초록
Western Institutional Review Board (WIRB) is one of the oldest Institutional Review Boards (IRBs) and the largest IRB among the independent IRBs in the United States. The research related scandals and subsequent public concerns and federal regulations affected the beginning and development of the WIRB.
 WIRB has several characteristics compared with other IRBs, which contribute to the leading role in the research ethics area. First, WIRB is an independent IRB in a form of the for-profit organization. That raises an issue of conflicts of interest in IRB review, but that provides the basis for getting the adequate resources such as personnels, facilities and equipments. Second, WIRB has a specialty in the area, which has been accumulated through many experiences and well-trained IRB professionals. Third, WIRB takes advantage of the globalization of the research in a positive way.
 These observational findings may be utilized to provide an idea for improving the current IRB systems in Korea.
