The topic of the present talk is substantial equivalence. The thinking is roughly this. If food derived from a certain plant has been consumed for a long time by human beings or by animals without causing a health problem, that provides good evidence that the plant is safe. When plant breeders produce a new strain of the same kind of plant, and the new strain is substantially equivalent to the parental variety, it is rational to expect that the new strain will likewise be safe ? even if food from it has not yet been eaten. If a transgenic version of the plant is substantially equivalent to the parental variety, then it is rational to expect that this too will be safe.
Amazingly, and fortunately, no major public health disasters have arisen, not yet. However, it is still possible that future evidence might reveal that these crops have caused long-term damage to public health. In fact, it is impossible to prove conclusively that any food is safe. What we can say is that now, in 2015, it is reasonable to believe that you won’t get suddenly sick after eating the now familiar GM soy or corn, or from processed foods containing them. But you should be aware that there might be longer term effects, including an increased risk of cancer from herbicide residues in food derived from ht crops.
