약
50년 전에 의사들은 청진기, 체온계, 혈압계와 기초 의약품 등을 이용하여 환자들을 치료하였으나 생명공학 기술이 발달함에 따라 각종 첨단
의료기기의 도입, 표적 치료제의 개발 등으로 보건의료 산업에서 눈부신 질적 성강을 이끌어 냈다. 예를 들어, 만성골수성백혈병
(chronic myeloid leukemia)은 치료가 매우 어려웠으나 2001년 글리벡이 허가된 이후 전체 투여 환자 중 약 89%가
진단 후 5년간 생존하는 놀라운 결과를 보였다. 경제적 관점에서 볼 때 신약 개발 산업은 고부가가치 산업이다. 2014년 기준으로 관절염
등에 사용하는 휴미라 (Humira)는 전 세계적으로 14조원 이상의 매출을 기록하였다. 신약의 영업이익이 매출의 30~50%를 차지하고,
특허 출원 후 20년간 독점권이 주어지므로 신약개발은 황금알을 낳는 산업이라 할 수 있다. 따라서 신약의 개발은 현대 국민보건의 질적
향상에 필수적임과 동시에 고부가가치를 창출하여 국가 경제에 커다란 영향을 미치게 되므로 전 세계적으로 미래 전략산업의 핵심 분야로 적극
육성하고 있다. 이에 발맞춰 우리나라도 국가적으로 많은 지원과 제도 개선을 통해 신약개발을 적극 독려하고 있다. 그 결과 국내의 대표적인
임상시험센터들은 이미 선진국 수준의 임상시험 수행이 가능할 만큼 성장하였으므로 앞으로는 국가 균형발전과 국내 임상시험의 전반적인 수준
향상을 위해 지방 임상시험센터에도 보다 적극적인 지원과 투자가 필요하다. |

South
Korea has become to be the prime locations for the clinical trials. However,
the number of clinical study sites was highest in Seoul contributing to 55.8%
of all sites nationally at 2012, which suggests that clinical trials are
conducted in concentrated regions and sites. Here, we examined the current
situation of clinical trials in Korea and tried to find out the solution to
achieve balanced development between Seoul and local regions. Recent data
indicates that the top 5 hospitals participated in the 37.1 and 35.7 percent
of total clinical trials in Korea in 2011 and 2012, respectively. In
addition, 49.7 percent of clinical trial sites are concentrated in Seoul and
Gyounggi-do area. To find out the solution to achieve balanced development
between Seoul and local regions we gathered specific information by surveys
and it revealed that local clinical trial centers are needed to set up
infrastructure and professional manpower enough to fulfill clinical trials
satisfying global standards. To achieve this goal institution and the country
has to invest sources in clinical trial center to match the future needs and
balanced development. |
