오늘날
우리는 기후변화, 대기오염, 자원고갈, 물부족 등의 환경위기로 대표되는 다중적 위기를 겪고 있다고 얘기된다. 그래서 이러한 위기를 극복하기
위한 여러 노력들이 이루어진다. 이러한 문제를 해결위한 방안으로 가장 쉽게 생각할 수 있는 것이 과학기술적 해결책이다. 그리고 윤리적이고
철학적인 해결 방안도 마련된다. 그러나 이러한 해결방안들은 저마다 실천 상의 많은 문제점들과 한계를 지니고 있다. 여기서는 이러한 한계의
부분적 이유는 환경윤리가 공리주의나 칸트윤리학 같은 전통적인 규칙 중심적 윤리학에 치중하는데 있다고 생각하고 그 한계를 극복하기 위한
방안으로 환경 덕 윤리를 집중적으로 살펴보고자 한다. 그러기 위해 주로 샌들러의 논의에 의존해 환경윤리에서 환경덕 윤리가 왜 필요한지,
그리고 환경 덕윤리가 구체적으로 무엇인지, 그리고 환경 윤리에서 환경 덕이라는 것이 어떠한 역할을 하는지를 살핀다. 그러고 나서 환경 덕
윤리가 소비주의, 자발적 소박함, 땅의 윤리 그리고 유전자 조작 농산물과 같은 구체적인 환경적 쟁점들에 어떻게 응용될 수 있는지에 대한 몇
가지 사례를 검토하고 더 이상의 자세한 논의는 숙제로 제시하며 논의를 마무리 한다. |

These
days, it is said that we are faced with ‘multiple crisis’ represented by
environmental crisis, which include the air pollution, resource depletion,
water stress, global climate change and desertification, etc. So many people
have tried to cope with these crises. But when we are faced with
controversial environmental problems, many people preferentially tend to rely
on science and technology(or on economics) for solutions. Nonetheless,
relying on science or technology(or on economics or law) without also
considering the ethical and philosophical issues involved can raise as many
problems as it solves. Because of this feature of technological solutions, we
look instead to philosophical ethics for guidance. But we have limitations in
its practice. I think that these limitations are partly caused by
rule-oriented approach(e.g., utilitarianism and Kantian ethics) to the
problem in environmental ethics. For that reason, to search for the way to
overcome these limitations, I focus my examination on the environmental
virtue ethics. To do that, drawing on the work of Ronald Sandler, I first
examine why is there a need for an environmental virtue ethic. And then I
examine what the environmental virtue really means and the role of
environmental virtue in environmental ethics. And finally I shortly examine
some examples applying environmental virtue ethics to the concrete
environmental issues such as voluntary simplicity, consumerism, land ethic
and genetically modified crops. But these issues examined in this article are
not fully answered. The fuller explanation of the environmental virtue ethic
still needs to be done. |
