초록[abstracts]
[본 연구는 호주의 한인 ‘1세대’ 여성의 이주과정과 삶의 경험을 젠더관점에서 분석한다. 구체적인 연구 질문은 첫째, ‘1세대’ 여성의 호주이민을 유발한 동인과 구조는 무엇인가? 둘째, ‘1세대’ 여성들은 누구이며, 이주 전 과정에서 그들은 어떤 젠더화된 경험을 하였는가? 셋째, 젠더정체성이 그들의 이민 과정을 어떻게 구조화했는가? 시기적으로 1970년대와 1980년대 초반에 호주로 이주한 한인 ‘1세대’는 주로 베트남, 독일, 남미, 중동 등에서 해외이주노동을 한 경험을 토대로 호주로 ‘재이민’한 사람들이다. 주로 남성기술자와 그들의 가족을 대상으로 입국을 허용했던 호주정부의 이민정책으로 인해 여성들은 남편 또는 아버지의 초청에 의해 입국이 허용된 수동적인 이민주체로 각인되었다. 한편, 구술면담에 따르면, ‘1세대’ 여성들이 남성에게 의존적인 수동적인 이민자로서의 삶을 산 것은 아니다. 본 연구에서는 그들이 엄마이자 아내, 며느리, 노동자라는 다양한 정체성에 따라 전통적인 젠더역할의 지속적인 수행과 탈피를 요구받기도 했지만, 궁극적으로 남녀 간의 젠더권력 구조를 바꾸는 데에는 한계가 있었다는 점을 논의한다. 또한 본 연구는 호주 한인 ‘1세대’ 여성의 이민 경험이 거시 구조적 요인에 따라 집합적으로 유사한 경향을 보이지만, 가족 구성이나 직업 등 개인적인 차이로 인해 다양한 양상을 보인다는 점에도 주목한다.
Based upon the literature on gender analysis of migration, this study examines 1) macro-structural determinants of ‘first-generation’ Korean female migration to Australia, 2) who the first-generation Korean women were and what gender-specific experiences of migration they had from the pre-departure to post-arrival periods, and 3) how gender as a social system contextualized their migration processes. The ‘first-generation" Korean Australians are the first Koreans who moved to Australia in order to live and work there, mainly from the 1970s to the early 1980s. Many of them immigrated to Australia via Vietnam, Germany, and South American countries. In most of the literature focusing on these ‘first-generation’ Korean Australians, women are either overlooked or mentioned briefly as dependent family members of male migrants. However, this study argues that women entered Australia as dependent family members of male migrants mainly because of male-biased immigration visa polices. Moreover, according to in-depth interviews with seven ‘first-generation" Korean Australian women, their life experiences differ depending on their family background, job qualifications, marital status, etc. However, this study shows their pre-migration as well as post-migration identities were constructed and renegotiated in the tension between discontinuities and continuities, disempowerment and empowerment. This implies that they were not passive subjects onto whom power relations and identities were written.]
