This study explores how mass media works in the process of dealing with bioethics. The topology of ethical scopes varies in terms of the way bioethical knowledge is combined with humanistic knowledge. In this case, ‘readjustment of the agenda priority’ occurs, which postpones discussions on the results of life science research in terms of ethical perspectives. In contemporary society, media explains to the public the benefits of life science. In doing so, media interprets and evaluates bioethics through its characteristic working.  In media reporting on bioethical issues, there lies a picture of bioethicists depicted by media. Though media cites the opinion of bioethicists in reporting bioethical issues, it often conveys the final judgment of bioethicists only, including the minimal explanations given by bioethicists. At this time, media depicts bioethicists as people who judge without sufficient bases. Also, media describes bioethicists as a ‘life science risk manager’ who resolves ethical dilemma life science faces.  Indeed, media publicizes bioethics-related events, reconfirming bioethical principles, evaluating the priority among bioethical principles as well. Sometimes, media skips important principles and perspectives of bioethics, and simplifies complex bioethical issues. In this course, media can limit the social and academic trajectory of bioethics.

국문 초록[abstracts] 

본논문은 생명윤리를 다루는 매스 미디어의 작동방식에 대해 탐구한다. 생명과학 지식과 인문적 지식을 조합하는 방식에 따라 생명과학 현상을 바라보는 윤리적 관점의 중요성은 매우 달라진다. 특정의 조합에 의해 생명과학 연구 성과의 윤리성에 대한 논의가 뒤로 미루어지는 ‘논의 우선순위의 재조정 현상’이 발생하는 것이다. 현대사회에서 생명과학의 연구 성과를 대중에게 설명하는 역할은 주로 매스 미디어에 맡겨져 있다. 여기서 매스 미디어는 특유의 작동방식을 통해 생명윤리를 해석하고 평가한다.  생명윤리와 관련된 사안의 보도 속에는 언론이 그린 생명윤리학자들의 모습이 있다. 생명윤리 현안을 보도함에 있어서 미디어는 생명윤리학자의 의견을 인용하긴 하나, 이 때 미디어는 최소한의 설명만이 포함된 생명윤리학자들의 ‘최종판단’만을 보도하는 경우가 대부분이다. 이 때 생명윤리학자들은 언론에 의해 ‘충분한 근거 없이 판단하는 사람’으로 그려진다. 한편, 언론은 생명윤리학자들을 생명과학이 직면한 윤리적 딜레마를 손쉽게 해결해주어 그들의 앞길을 터주는 일종의 ‘생명과학의 위기 관리자’의 모습으로 그린다. 나아가, 언론은 생명윤리와 연관된 사건을 알리고 생명윤리의 원칙을 재확인 하며, 동시에 원칙들의 우선순위를 매긴다. 때로 언론은 생명윤리의 중요한 원칙, 혹은 관점을 생략하거나 누락시키기도 하며 복잡한 생명윤리적 사안을 단순화시킨다. 이런 과정을 통해 언론은 생명윤리의 사회적, 학문적 동선(動線)을 제한할 수 있다.
