여러 학자들은 불교에 있어서 동물윤리의 정립가능성에 대해 회의를 표하고 있다. 그 비판적 시각은 크게 두 가지로 정리할 수 있다. 첫째 불교의 동물윤리는 서양의 동물윤리의 복제에 불과하다. 둘째 불교의 동물윤리는 원리적인 측면에 치우쳐 있다. 따라서 정작 동물윤리가 실질적 효과를 얻기 위해서 제시해야 할 실천적 행위의 준칙은 찾을 수 없다. 예컨대 불살생의 원리는 당장 단백질을 섭취해야 하는 현실에 처한 어린이 혹은 병자가 그 행위를 선택하려고 할 때, 실질적으로 어떤 도움도 주지 않는다는 것이다. 필자는 본논문에서 다음과 같은 것을 밝혔다. 첫째 서양의 동물윤리는 다양한 한계를 지니고 있는데, 불교의 동물윤리는 이러한 한계를 극복할 수 있는 다양한 사유체계를 가지고 있다. 따라서 복제적이라고 하는 말은 타당하지 않다. 둘째 불교의 동물윤리를 원리적인 측면과 실천적인 측면의 둘로 나누어서 고찰함으로써, 원리적인 측면에서 해결할 수 없었던, 현실적 행위의 준칙을 도출할 수 있었다. 그러므로 실천적인 측면에서 취약하다는 말은 타당하지 않다.
다국어 초록[Multilingual Abstract]
Several scholars doubt the possible establishment of Animal ethics in Buddhism. The critical point of view is organized in two things. First, The animal ethics in Buddhism is only the replica of that in the West. Second, the animal ethics in Buddhism is partial to the principle side. So, to get a substantial effect, the animal ethics should present the rule for the practical behavior, but the rule cannot be[is not] found. For example, the principle of no life-destruction is not helpful in case a child or a patient who needs a protein right away is willing to select the behavior. The writer revealed the following in this thesis. First, while the animal ethics of the West has a variety of limitation, that of Buddhism has a variety of the thinking system to be able to overcome this limitation. So the insistence on the reproduction is improper. Second, by considering the Buddhism animal ethics into both principle and practice, the rule of the practical behavior could be deduced, not in the principle but in the practice. So, the insistence that the animal ethics is weak to the practice is improper.
