The central dogma of female reproductive biology is that females are born with certain number of oocytes that they can ever possess. However, this dogma of female reproductive biology seems to be reconsidered since several studies have been reported on the isolation of ovarian stem cells (OSCs) and possible postnatal neo-oogenesis. OSCs are capable of proliferation in vitro and forming oocyte-like cells when transplanted into ovarian cortex of mice. Although the controversies regarding their existence and potential clinical use are still in debate, OSCs can be utilized for the treatment of patients who suffered from premature ovarian failure, poor response to ovarian stimulation, etc. In this review, an overview of their identification and possible clinical application will be provided.
