초록[abstracts] 

[최근 배아줄기세포가 난치병에 대한 새로운 해결책으로 제시됨으로써 생명과학은 급부상하고 있다.  특히 우리나라에서 생명과학은 대단한 위상을 가지고 있으며, 과학에 대한 전문적인 지식이 없는 일반인들도 대다수가 줄기세포라는 전문용어를 알고 있을 정도다. 생명과학이 새 시대를 주도할 과학 분야 중 하나라는 것은 자명하다. 하지만 사회 곳곳에서 아직 생명과학이 다루는 여러 가지 주제들에 대한 논쟁이 계속되고 있다.  이에 우리는 생명과학의 주요 쟁점이 되는 현안들을 10가지로 간략하게 추려 소개하고자 한다. 발생과정 중어디부터가 생명이고 어디부터가 생명이 아닌지를 바라보는 서로 다른 관점들을 제시하며, 생명과학의 핵심이 되는 인간난자를 채취하는 과정으로 널리 사용되는 과배란 유도와 그 부작용에 대해서도 살펴 본다. 착상전 유전자검사나 맞춤아기를 통해서는 유전자변형에 대해 알아보고자 한다. 장기이식을 위해 이루어지고 있는 이종간 교잡과 동물실험에 대한 윤리, 유전자 변형생물체도 현대 생명과학이 안고 있는 중요한 과제 중 하나이다. 임상실험에서 주의할 점과 연구에 임하는 과학자로서 갖추어야 할 정직성이라는 덕목에 대해서도 소개한다.  생명과학은 인간의 건강증진과 수명연장을 주요 목적으로 하는 만큼 연구가 계속되면 인류의 복지에 이바지 할 수 있을 것이나 윤리 문제를 고려해야 한다. 생명과학은 이미 세계적 흐름이 되었다. 21세기의 성장 동력이자 인류의 건강증진에 기여할 수 있다는 점과 개인유전정보의 오남용과 배아에 대한 우생학적 유전자 변형이라는 윤리문제 사이에서 고민해야 하는 것이다. 충분한 토론을 통해 발전적인 해결방안을 모색하는 것이 해결해야 할 과제이다., 

Recently, the research in embryonic stem cell which has been suggested as a new treatment for some incurable diseases leads to fast development in biological science. In Korea, biological science has been a special attention. People who don't have any professional knowledge know the scientific term, “stem cell”. It is clear that life science is one of the major disciplines in the future. However, there are controversies on ethical aspects of life science.  Hence, we would like to raise major issues in the field of recent biological science. We would suggest different aspects about the time point life starts. We also consider the induction of superovulation and its side effects because human egg is the key of biological science and superovulation is the way of gathering ova. Genetic engineering is associated with genetic testing and designer baby. Chimera for organ transplantation, animal experiments, and genetically modified organisms are urgent problems life science face. We would introduce regulations for clinical trials and research honesty, moral character which should be built inside the scientists' mind.  The major purposes of biological science are promotion of human health. The study of biological science would contribute to human welfare; however, ethical problems are not to be avoided. The tendency of the world science is toward life science. Searching for the appropriate answers to growth power of 21 century i.e. contribution to the human health promotion, and misuse of personal genetic information, eugenic modification to embryos is really important. It is the matter of the highest priority that we should try to find solutions through discussions, which would lead us to the ethical points.]
