푸코는 국민국가의 통치권력이 인구를 대상으로 하는 생명정치를 특징으로 한다고 말했다. 아감벤은 여기서 더 나아가 생명정치의 작동방식은 생명을 사회적 생명(비오스)과 벌거벗은 생명(조에)으로 분리시킨 후 벌거벗은 생명을 국가의 통치권으로부터 배제시킴으로써 통치권 안에 포함시키는 포함적 배제의 방식을 통해 권력을 행사하며, 궁극적으로 포함적 배제의 영역은 더욱 확장될 것으로 예견했다. 이 포함적 배제의 영역 안에 놓여있는 사람들이 벌거벗은 생명이다. 이 글은 푸코와 아감벤의 논의를 바탕으로, 벌거벗은 생명으로의 환원이 계급, 인종, 젠더, 섹슈얼리티 등의 사회적 위계 체계들과 상호교차를 통해 확산된다는 점을 주장한다. 또한 벌거벗은 생명의 이미지들의 유통이 무엇을 의도하고 있으며, 그 고통의 이미지들을 어떻게 읽어야 할지의 문제를 다룬다. 마지막으로, 버틀러의 논의에 근거해 생명정치의 시대에 페미니스트 윤리의 방향은 사회적 생명과 벌거벗은 생명 즉 비오스와 조에의 분리를 넘어 통합을 이루게 하는 데 있으며, 이것은 권리의 개념으로 재현되지 않는 벌거벗은 생명의 모습을 듣고 느낄 수 있는 감수성과 상상력의 고양을 통해 인간성을 복원시키려는 기획에서 시작된다는 점을 주장한다.

  Foucault wrote the sovereign power of nation-state can be characterized by biopolitics regarding population as the object of governing. Agamben elaborated further claiming that biopolitics starts to operate by separating life into qualified life(bios) and bare life(zoe), then simultaneously excluding bare life from and subjecting into sovereign power, or applying exclusion/inclusion tactics and predicted further expansion of the realm of exclusion/inclusion tactics. The people subjected to this tactics are bare life. This work claims, based on the arguments of Foucault and Agamben, reduction into bare life will further spread and be intensified through the intersection with such social hierarchical systems as class, race, gender, sexuality, etc. What the circulation of images of bare life intends to and how to read its images of pain are also the problems discussed. Lastly Butler"s arguments are utilized to claim that the direction of feminist ethics in the age of biopolitics resides in going beyond separation of qualified life/bare life or bios/zoe into new politics capable of consolidation without relying on the exclusion/inclusion tactics and this will be possible only by the project that aims to revive the humanity by heightening our sensitivity and imagination capable of discovering and perceiving the hidden aspects of bare life that cannot be reproduced by the concept of human rights.
