  미국의 식품의약국(Food and Drug Administration, FDA)이 수요일에 최초로 인공 이자의 사용을 허락함. “MiniMed 670G”라 불리는 이 인공 이자는 메드트로닉(Medtronic)에 의해 개발되었음. 인공 이자는 내년 봄부터 사용될 예정임.

   스마트폰처럼 생긴 이 기계는 자동으로 type 1 당뇨병 환자의 체내 인슐린 농도를 파악하고 조절할 수 있음, 이 기계는 무선으로 인슐린 펌프와 연결되어 있어 혈중 포도당의 농도를 조절함. 환자가 직접 자신의 혈중 포도당 농도를 조절할 수도 있음. 

  그러나 당뇨병 환자들은 이 기계가 높은 가격에 시장에 나올 것을 우려하고 있음. 기계를 개발한 메드트로닉은 아직 가격을 공개하지 않았음.

  메드트로닉은 123명의 type1 당뇨병 환자들을 대상으로 기계를 테스트했음. 테스트 결과 혈액의 산성화나 낮은 글루코스 농도와 같은 부작용을 겪은 환자는 한명도 없었음. 

[STAT News] FDA Approves First ‘Artificial Pancreas’ for Diabetes Treatment

The Food and Drug Administration on Wednesday approved the first so-called artificial pancreas, an out-of-body device expected to lift the burden for some diabetics on the daily grind they must go through to keep their blood sugar levels stable. It will soon be available for patients with type 1 diabetes who are over age 14. The device, which looks like a smartphone and was developed by Medtronic, is designed to automatically monitor and administer insulin for type 1 diabetes patients, for whom the pancreas’s ability to provide insulin naturally is impaired........
