  5년 내에 수술 로봇의 사용이 지금의 2배 이상 증가할 것이라는 예상이 제기됨. 이는 미국에서 한 해 시행되는 수술의 3분의 1에 해당하는 수치임.

  현재는 다빈치 수술 로봇(da Vinchi machines)로 유명한 인튜이티브 서지컬(Intuitive Surgical)사가 로봇 수술의 보급을 주도하고 있음. 이외에도 메드트로닉(Medtronic)사나 존슨앤존슨(Johnson & Johnson)과 구글(Google)이 지원하고 있는 스타트업 회사들도 미래 세대 수술 로봇의 개발에 박차를 가하고 있음.

  인튜이티브 서지컬사에 따르면 수술 로봇은 탈장 수술, 비만 치료, 자궁 절제술, 전립선 수술 등에 사용되고 있음. 의사들은 수술 로봇이 의사들의 피로를 줄이고 수술의 정확도를 향상시킬 수 있다고 말함. 반면 수술 로봇의 도입은 의사들이 하루에 시행할 수 있는 수술의 건 수가 줄어든다는 단점도 지니고 있음.

Even though many doctors see need for improvement, surgical robots are poised for big gains in operating rooms around the world.

Within five years, one in three U.S. surgeries - more than double current levels - is expected to be performed with robotic systems, with surgeons sitting at computer consoles guiding mechanical arms. Companies developing new robots also plan to expand their use in India, China and other emerging markets........
