  페럴림픽 금메달 리스트인 벨기에의 마리케 버부트(Marieke Vervoort)씨는 안락사 의사를 밝힌 장애인임. 그 누구도 그녀가 내린 결정을 철회하도록 그녀를 설득하지 않음. 그러나 만약 우사인 볼트가 같은 결정을 내렸다면 사람들의 반응을 달랐을 것임.  

  네덜란드는 안락사를 합법화 하여 “견딜 수 없는 고통”을 호소하는 말기 환자나 장애인에게 안락사를 허용하고 있음. 가장 최근에 안락사와 조력 자살을 허용한 캐나다는 심각하고 치유가 불가능한 질병이나 장애를 겪는 환자가 자신의 의지에 따라 삶을 마감할 수 있도록 함.

  자살은 물론 개인의 선택임. 그러나 장애를 겪는 환자가 삶을 마감하고 싶어 한다는 이유로 우리가 그들의 선택을 동조해서는 안됨. 삶의 가치는 육체적인 것뿐만 아니라 주변인들과의 관계 속에 있는 것임.

  조력 자살을 선택하기 이전에 연명 의료(end-of-life care)를 고려해야함. 현재 호스피스나 완화 의료(palliative care) 서비스가 부족한 실정임. 버부트와 같은 장애인이 고통 받는 삶에 지쳐 죽음을 원할 때 단순히 고개만 끄덕이는 것은 도덕적이지 못함. 고통을 겪는 장애인에게 느끼는 연민이 조력 자살 허용을 정당화할 수는 없음.

If I said I wanted to die, the press, celebrities and the public would support my choice, seeing it as rational and understandable. Hell, they would probably set up a go-fund-me campaign to help me make it happen. Yet when a healthy, non-disabled person wants to kill themself it’s seen as a tragedy, and support and prevention tools are provided. If nothing else convinces me that to legalise assisted suicide is not a safe option for many of us then this does. Suicide is not seen as socially desirable – so why is assisted suicide seen as compassionate when it’s for ill or disabled people?
